The Algeria Youth Leadership Program

Funded by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Citizen Exchange Division, the 2010 Algeria Youth Leadership Program is going to introduce 25 high school students (and 3 high school teachers) from Algeria and 10 high school students from Nevada to a comprehensive survey of the following:
- Community Activism: Students will design their own action plans to learn about how they could make a difference in local Reno communities as well as follow-up projects in Algeria.
- Civic Education: Students will volunteer at various non-profit organizations such as the local food bank. They will partake in trail restoration and participate in workshops about diversity, identity, conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue.
- Leadership: In addition to many leadership building activities, the students will be involved in dynamic leadership workshops and conferences, allowing them to get to know other student leaders from the community.
- Media Literacy: Students will learn how to create and maintain their own websites. This will provide them an outlet to share their experiences in the Unites States and to broadcast their community activism projects to people around the world. This task will be guided by the University of Nevada Reno’s Journalism School.
- Cultural Activities: Participants will partake in many cultural activities during this program, including but not limited to art festivals, concerts, plays, sports events, rock climbing, and much more!!. Participants will also get the chance visit Washington, DC during the 4th of July, our Nations independence day, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe during this camp.
The camp will run from June 30th, 2010 til July 31st, 2010.

Home Hosting
As a home host, a fancy estate isn’t required, just an extra bedroom, some meals for your guest and an open heart! Your guest will participate each day in schedule classes, presentations and events. Additionally, the NNIC will plan some weekend activities to learn about our culture and history in Nevada and the United States. The NNIC will provide a cultural briefing for the Home Host participants a week prior to the guest arrival that will include some background on the visitors and their region as well as some key words and phrases to facilitate communication between host and visitor. The program will also include social gatherings and receptions in which you and your visitor will be able to meet and socialize with other hosts and visitors. Be a home host — the experience will be priceless!
Are you ready and/or interested? Then have a look at our Home Hosting flyer, or go ahead directly and download, print, fill out and send us the home host application form!
