2009 Algeria Youth Leadership Program

the 2009 Algeria Youth Leadership Program

Funded by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Citizen Exchange Division, the 2009 Algeria Youth Leadership Program introduced 25 high school students (and 3 high school teachers) from Algeria and 10 high school students from Reno, Nevada to a comprehensive survey of the following:

  • Community Activism:  Students designed their own action plans to learn about how they could make a difference in local Reno communities as well as follow-up projects in Algeria.
  • Civic Education: Students volunteered at various non-profits, including a food bank and trail restoration and participated in workshops about diversity, identity, conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue.
  • Leadership: In addition to many leadership building activities, the students were involved in dynamic leadership workshops and conferences, allowing them to get to know other student leaders from the community.
  • Media Literacy: Students learned to film and edit their own documentary about their experience in Algeria and the United States and visited with many different professionals in journalistic fields.
  • Cultural Activities: Participants partook in many cultural events including art festivals, a powwow, a tour of San Francisco and Shakespeare on the beach.

The camp ran from July 26 – August 21, consisting of activities in the Reno area, a 3-day stay in San Francisco and an 11-day stay at a camp in Lake Tahoe.

Action Plans

Action Plans

Every group targeted an area that they were passionate toward improving.  The following topics were chosen by the participants and a charter was created, announcing their commitment to improving these situations:

Stereotypes

We would like to see equality in the classroom and the community, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Ignorance and Stupidity

The sharing of knowledge will produce awareness, effective communication and promote wisdom.  We would like people in our community to be educated and informed about issues that affect their lives.

Unequal Opportunities

We would like youth to be prepared to advocate for and create opportunities to achieve their personal and career goals.

Drugs and Alcohol

We would like to reduce teen substance abuse and drug addiction in our community.

Poverty

We would like young people to have the food they need to be healthy.  Our goal is that no young person will go hungry in our community.

Fear

He who fears does not know.  Accept and embrace change.  We would like for people in our community to support and make the necessary changes to improve their lives.

Home Hosting

Home Hosting

As a home host, a fancy estate isn’t required, just an extra bedroom, some meals for your guest and an open heart! Your guest will participate each day in schedule classes, presentations and events.  Additionally, the NNIC will plan some weekend activities to learn about our culture and history in Nevada and the United States. The NNIC will provide a cultural briefing for the Home Host participants a week prior to the guest arrival that will include some background on the visitors and their region as well as some key words and phrases to facilitate communication between host and visitor.  The program will also include social gatherings and receptions in which you and your visitor will be able to meet and socialize with other hosts and visitors.  Be a home host — the experience will be priceless!
