Executive Director, Northern Nevada International Center:
Carina A. Black, Ph.D.

A native of Argentina and a citizen of Switzerland and the US, Carina Black has lived in the United States since 1988. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1997 in Comparative Politics. She is the first Executive Director of the Northern Nevada International Center. Currently, she also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Council for International Visitors. As a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno, Dr. Black has taught courses in global studies, world politics, comparative politics, democratization, international organizations and Latin American politics. She has also been actively involved in international education for the local community, and support programs for minority groups. International Visitor Leadership Program Coordinator:
Joaquin Roces

Joaquin is a graduate of the University of Nevada Reno majoring in International Affairs with a minor in French. His focus is in the Middle East and former Soviet Republics. At UNR, Joaquin studied Russian history, Soviet Politics and Foreign Policy, Middle Eastern Geography, history and political systems. He studied 4 years of Russian and two years of Arabic in addition to his minor course work. Joaquin also studied Russian and Soviet tactics while serving as a US Marine from 1985 until 1988 when he was medically discharged for wounds received in the line of duty. Joaquin has served his home state of Nevada in the public sector under the Governor’s office and within the Nevada Indian Commission. Since 1997, he has been a criminal prosecutor in Indian Country representing various tribes of Northern Nevada and has been twice appointed as a Special Prosecutor for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Additionally, he has served on the Washoe County Domestic Violence Task Force and the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. He has been a Program Coordinator for the NNIC since 2006 working with international visitors under the International Visitors Leadership Programs, Open World and Community Connections Programs. In 2008, the University of Nevada Reno bestowed upon him the Thornton Peace Prize for his work with victims of domestic violence in Indian Country and his work in Public Diplomacy. International Visitor Leadership Program Coordinator:
Dustin Huebner

Dustin HuebnerDustin is a junior at the University of Nevada-Reno.  He is studying International Affairs with a minor in foreign affairs.  Dustin was born in Alaska and lived there until he graduated high school.  Upon graduation he moved to Reno, NV. where he began his college career which has been a collection of studying, snowboarding, traveling, and making friends from all over the World.  He started at the NNIC as an intern and is now a program coordinator which allows him to work in the field he is most passionate about, public diplomacy.  His future plans include studying Portuguese in Brazil so he can finally speak to all his friends from there in their own language.  After college Dustin would like to find a career that will help the people of this world build mutual understandings.  “What makes us different is that which makes us the same!” You can send Dustin Huebner an e-mail message, to: CLICK ME

 

International Visitor Leadership Program Coordinator:
Corazon Padilla

Corazon Padilla, IVLP CoordinatorBorn in the Philippines, Corazon Padilla grew up in the Reno-Sparks area after moving to the United States with her family in 1990. She is a senior student at the University of Nevada, Reno majoring in both Sociology and International Affairs and minoring in Music and Psychology.  Fascinated in learning about people and their cultures throughout the globe, she initially joined the NNIC as a volunteer at the beginning of 2009 to learn of other ways in which people worldwide can build mutual understandings of one another. Corazon has had the irreplaceable opportunity to work with international students and has travelled to various countries. She returns to the Philippines regularly to visit her family, has travelled to several countries in Central Europe and will be studying in Prague with the USAC program in the summer of 2009. She can communicate in Tagalog and American Sign Language and intends to attain fluency in both languages in the future. She aims to travel throughout her life to continually learn about people around the world and share her knowledge and understanding with others. Education Outreach Coordinator:
Natasha Majewski

Natasha was the initial planner for the first NNIC Global Kids Summer Camp in 2005 and has now returned to the Center after spending two years backpacking across South America, beginning in Argentina and ending in Colombia. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 Cum Laude with a duel major in Journalism and Spanish and a minor in Photography. She has worked for various publications and was an editor for her campus newspaper. Natasha studied for one year in Alicante, Spain. In total, she has traveled to 18 countries in North and South America, Europe and Northern Africa. She loves learning how people around the world live and is an avid Yerba Mate drinker. Intercultural Business Education and Training (IBET) Program Manager:
Cheryl Woehr

Cheryl joined the NNIC staff in 2003 when she began the IBET Program providing cultural awareness and diversity training programs to local businesses and organizations in the Reno area. She grew up in a military family and has traveled much of her life. She has traveled to over 26 countries in 4 continents and lived overseas for 9 years in Spain and Libya. She holds a M.A. degree in Psychology, Counseling and a B.A. in psychology. She has extensive experience conducting training for educational institutions, government agencies, non-profits, professional associations and small and large companies.
