Volunteering Opportunities
If you are interested in volunteering at the Northern Nevada International Center, we have a few options for you: Hosting, Driving, and Interpreting. You can host international guests for dinner while sharing diverse cultural backgrounds. Additionally, we need volunteer drivers to take the international guests around Reno and Tahoe to see what we have to offer. Furthermore, we need experienced interpreters for the guests.
- Hosting: we need volunteers to take in a group of individuals for an evening of dinner and fun. This could also consist of an individual staying at your home for a time period of 7, 15, or 30 days.
- Driving: volunteer drivers are sometimes needed to take the international visitors around Reno and Tahoe for the day. The individuals will need to be picked up from their hotel and escorted around the town. We will need a copy of a valid driver’s license.
- Interpreting: our Language Bank does cost money for our interpreters, but we need volunteers to interpret for those who can not afford to pay.

We are committed to educating the next generation of global citizens and therefore provide opportunities for internships for local area youth. Internships at the International Center are highly competitive and require a time commitment for either fall, spring or summer. Most interns are university students, but talented high school students are encouraged to apply and will be chosen if they show a level of maturity and drive.
Internships typically last between six weeks (summer internships only) and four months and are offered three times a year; spring, summer and fall. High school interns can complete fewer hours. However, all interns are expected to spend a minimum of eight hours per week at the International Center (M-F 8-5pm) in order to gain a minimum level of organizational knowledge of the International Center. Second language and strong verbal and writing communication skills are preferred in choosing applicants.
Interns are expected to complete a 2-hour training a the beginning of the internship; and complete a minimum of 150 hours (10 hours during a 15-week semester and more hours during the summer based on availability) provide a schedule they will strictly adhere to. Interns should consider the NNIC internship as a unique opportunity to gain professional and developmental skills that will assist them in furthering their career. As such, interns will be expected to understand professional ethics and standards as if the internship was a real job. At the beginning of each internship, interns will sign an agreement that details these ethical standards and expectations. Interns will also complete a 2-page write up upon completion of the internship. At the successful completion of the internship, the intern will receive a certificate of completion as well a letter of recommendation, if appropriate.
