World Affairs Council Speaker Series
NNIC is part of a network of 90 World Affairs Councils (link to www.world affairscouncils.org) around the United States, offering speakers series on important US foreign policy issues. NNIC’s speaker series is co-sponsored by the Associated Students at the University of Nevada (link ASUN); events are typically held on the second Wednesday of each month either on campus or at the Ramada Hotel.

William Breer

William Breer is currently the chairman of the Japan program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Mr. Breer spent 18 years in Japan, serving at the U.S. embassy as political officer, political counselor, and deputy chief of mission with Ambassadors Michael Armacost and Walter Mondale. In Washington, Breer served as country director for Japan, the most senior position dealing exclusively with U.S.-Japan relations, and as director for Northeast Asia in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

Professor Klare teaches courses on international peace and security issues at Hampshire College and, in rotation, at Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has written widely on U.S. military policy, international peace and security affairs, the global arms trade, and global resource politics. His books include American Arms Supermarket (1984), Low-Intensity Warfare (1988), Peace and World Security Studies: A Curriculum Guide (Fifth Edition, 1989; Sixth Edition, 1994), World Security: Challenges for a New Century (First Edition, 1991; Second Edition, 1994; Third Edition, 1998), Rogue States and Nuclear Outlaws (1995), Light Weapons and Civil Conflict (1999), Resource Wars (2001), and Blood and Oil (2004).

Gillian Martin Sorensen is a Senior Advisor at the United Nations Foundation, and is a national advocate on matters related to the United Nations and the United States-United Nations relationship, addressing audiences as diverse as Rotary International and the United States Air Force Academy; university students; staff and Members of Congress; journalists and leaders of civil society. In the last few years, she has made over 554 appearances, speaking about the United Nations and related issues.
Lisa Anderson
President, American University in Cairo and a specialist on politics in the Middle East and North Africa. Prior to joining AUC in 2008, she served at Columbia University as Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs, the Chair of the political science department, and the Cirector of the University’s Middle East Institute.
Dr. Joseph Chamie

Mr. Chamie served the UN in the field of population and development both overseas and in New York for more than 25 years. Among other major duties, he was the deputy secretary-general for the 1994 UN International Conference for Population and Development. In addition to completing numerous studies under UN authorship, he has written many studies in such areas as fertility, population estimates and projections, international migration and population and development policy.
