Celebrating International Women’s Day

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the 4th Annual International Women’s Day Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon was held on Sunday, March 7th. International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world to honor women for their accomplishments without regard to national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political divisions. It is a symbol for women across the world and is founded on the ideals of gender equality. With guest speakers Judge Deborah Schumacher and Jill Derby, both of whom gave excellent speeches, we commemorated women and reflected on the progress they have made towards equality, peace and development. The event was also an opportunity to raise awareness, unite, network, and mobilize for equality and reform to provide ongoing support and encouragement to women in their future endeavors.

This was the first year international visitors on the International Visitors Leadership Program participated at this event. Two women’s IVLP delegations—“Women and Justice” and “Women as Political Leaders”— joined us as the special guests. The international women were seated with members of the community during the event, allowing intriguing, educational and meaningful conversations and cultural exchange. The guests left inspired by the international visitors with a greater knowledge of the type of work the international visitors are doing in their communities and the global effects they have. With over 220 attendees, the luncheon was a huge success. Through the profits from the luncheon and the fine raffle, over $6000 was raised for women’s scholarships in the Northern Nevada area!

We thank everyone who participated and supported this cause and look forward to next year’s International Women’s Day.
