Delegates from Japan to study U.S. Judicial System

The Northern Nevada International Center will be hosting three delegates from Japan, coming to Reno from January 27-31, 2008.

This group will be meeting with multiple organizations and professionals in the community including:

  • The National Judicial College;
  • Honorable Judge Valerie Cook;
  • the Nevada Supreme Court;
  • The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony; and
  • The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Sign up for Arabic classes for Spring 2009!

The Northern Nevada International Center is pleased to announce Arabic classes for the spring 09 semester.

The introductory course (Level 1) will go over the fundamentals of the Arabic language and culture. In this class, students will learn the letters and sounds of Arabic as well as vocabulary and basic expressions which they will be expected to recognize and produce by the end of the semester. Furthermore, cultural notes and presentations by people from different parts of Arabic speaking countries will give students a look at the richness and variety of Arabic culture.

Level 2 is designed either for students who successfully completed level 1 or take an entry test with the instructor.

Level 4 is for designed for students who have successfully completed level 3 or take an entry test with the instructor. The Instructor for Spring 09 will be Fulbright Language Teacher Siham Al Farchi from Morocco.

Course schedule:

  • Level 1: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-7pm at UNR’s EJCH 220C
  • Level 2: Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-7pm at UNR’s EJCH 220C
  • Level 4: Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-5:15pm at UNR’s EJCH 220C

Fees: $375 plus cost of three books (approx. $50)

Moroccan Days (2): learn how to make Couscous!

Monday, November 17 will be the second part of a six-part series about Morocco that began last month.  Fulbright Arabic teacher Siham El Farchi, from Morocco, will teach a class on how to cook the famous, traditional Moroccan dish, Couscous.

If you’re curious - and to whet your appetite - this is what that delicious dish looks like:

This event will take place from 6:00-8:00 pm on the UNR campus, in the William Raggio Building, in room 1003.  The cost is $5 for students and $10 for the general public.

Special Guest Speaker: Mark T. Kimmitt, Asst. Sec. of State, Political-Military Affairs

On Tuesday, November 18, the Northern Nevada International Center will present “Assessing US Foreign Policy Challenges in Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan,” by Brig. Gen. Mark T. Kimmitt (US Army, Ret.), Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.

Mr. Kimmitt served for over 30 years as an officer in a wide variety of command, operational, and policy positions with extensive operational experience abroad, before retiring with the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army in 2006.

His assignments included Deputy Director of Operations and Chief Military Spokesman for Coalition Forces in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The event will take place at 7 pm in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theatre (on the second floor) of the University of Nevada, Reno.  It is free and open to the public.

NITA Workshop: Improvisation Techniques for Interpreters

The Nevada Interpreters and Translators Association (NITA - website) invites you to their Quarterly Member Meeting, which includes a workshop presentation on Improvisation Techniques for Interpreters - by Ines Swaney.

Ines Swaney is a federally and state-certified Spanish court interpreter, and ATA certified English-Spanish translator with more than 20 years of experience.

By means of a series of exercises borrowed from the field of Improvisational Acting, this workshop engages attendees in linguistic problem-solving capabilities.

This event is free and open to the public!

When: December 3, 2008 - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Where: UNR Campus, at the Matthewson IGT Knowledge Center, Auditorium 124 (street address: 1664 N. Virginia St., Reno, NV - see the locations map for directions; it’s the lower of the two pin markers placed at the center of that map)

The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to network with translation and interpretation professionals.

Human and Civil Rights Advocates from Brazil

They will me meeting with multiple organizations around the community including: Federal Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Nevada Attorney Generals Office, American Civil Liberties Union, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Six events to learn first-hand about Moroccan culture

Beginning October 20,2008, The Northern Nevada International Center proudly invites you to attend a six part series on the land, people and culture of Morocco with our Fulbright Arabic teacher Siham El Farchi. Highlights of the Moroccan adventure include cooking lessons (couscous and pastilla), henna painting, a panel on Women in Islam during International Women’s Day in March and an evening with the Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Aziz Mekouar.

The first event will be held on Monday, October 20 from 6-8pm at UNR’s Joe Ballroom C. There will be a presentation about Morocco as well as food and tea. The event is free and open to the public.
