About the International Visitors Programs

Each year, the Northern Nevada International Center designs and implements cultural and professional programs for more than 200 international delegates. Much of this activity is carried out for the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. The objective of our professional visitor programs is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to work more effectively in their areas of expertise.

The Center’s other programs include the Open World Program, administered through the Library of Congress, and Community Connections administered through USAID, and Forecast.

These programs provide foreign participants and their American counterparts with opportunities to exchange information and ideas, and to develop enduring professional relationships. These programs also give visitors insights into American society, culture, and institutions. Our Center’s visitor programs promote person-to-person contact, and help to build international understanding in Nevada one handshake at a time.

The Northern Nevada International Center’s professional visitor programs cover a broad range of topics, including:

  • NGO Capacity-Building and Public Advocacy
  • Conflict Resolution and Dispute Settlement
  • Rule of Law and Human Rights
  • Economic Development
  • State and Local Government
  • Legislative and Electoral Processes
  • Gender and Youth Issues
  • Journalism
  • Homeland Security and Terrorism Financing
  • U.S. Judicial System
  • Banking and Finance

Participants in our Center’s programs include business leaders, government officials, academic experts, and other professionals from over 60 nations. Over the years, many of them have risen to top leadership positions in their fields. The program’s more famous alumni include more than 100 current and former heads of state or government, such as prime ministers Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher (the United Kingdom), Lionel Jospin (France), Indira Gandhi (India), and Toshiki Kaifu (Japan), as well as President Anwar Sadat (Egypt) and Chancellor Willy Brandt (Germany).

According to Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister:

“The International Visitor Program offers priceless opportunities to understand the United States and the American people through direct experience, and to make valuable contacts… I am immensely grateful for the insights into the U.S. which this exchange scheme provided. I have drawn on them regularly since then.”
