The program consisted of a delegation of six Russian doctors who were in Reno from May 16 to May 24 to meet and echange best practices and ideas with local medical professionals, doctors and health care managers. The program was very successful and yielded many opportunities for futute programs and collaborations. Such as the visitors trip to Renown where they met with Dr. Eric Rost, chief radiation oncologist and medical director for Renown’s Institute for Cancer. Dr. Rost explained the new treatment option called TOMO Therapy.

Open World delegates and Patty Evans meet at Renown

This revolutionary technique is only available at Renown and no other hospital in the state can provide this cutting edge treatment. The delegates were so impressed that they discussed with Dr. Rost and Ms. Evans the possibility of a follow up Open World program to send Russian oncologists to meet with Dr. Rost and the Institute to learn about this new radiation therapy procedure as well as the possibility of Russian patients being able to be treated by the institute here in Reno, and Dr. Rost said that was certainly possible. Dr. Rost is one of the leading experts in TOMA Therapy procedures.

Additionally, during a dinner receptions on Wednesday and Thursday, the visitors also made additional contacts for possible follow on cooperations with their home host families; such as a possible visit and performance series of Reno’s Sierra Nevada Baliaka Society at the State University of Arts in Orenburg, as well as a small businness collaboration between a Reno entrepenuer and a counterpart in Krasnoyarsk.

With additional funding from UNAID, Ms Arnold conducted seminars in 6 other Russian cities, including Vladivostok and Tomsk. The NNIC would like to extend our deepest thanks to all of our professional resources, home host families, drivers, interpreters and staff for their most excellent contributions to the success of this program.
