Walter Douglas: The Middle East Priorities of the Obama Administration

The NNIC is proud to present Walter DouglasDirector, Office of Press and Public Diplomacy for the Near East, U.S. Department of State – who will give a presentation on The Middle East Priorities of the Obama Administration.

Mr. Walter Douglas will be joining us for an evening discussion of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

His comments will focus on priorities such as Arab-Israeli peace, future challenges in Iraq, engagement with Iran, and efforts to achieve a greater openness with civil society organizations across the region.

Mr. Douglas will also speak about engagement with regional media outlets.

About Mr. Douglas:

Walter Douglas is the Director of the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy in the Near Eastern Affairs Bureau in the U.S. Department of State. In that position, Walter oversees the bureau’s public affairs efforts in the Middle East. Prior to coming to that position in September, 2007, Walter was the public affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Walter has also served as the public affairs officer at American diplomatic missions in Turkey, Cyprus and Iceland. He was deputy to the spokesman at the United States Mission to the United Nations when Madeleine Albright was Ambassador. He served earlier in American embassies in South Korea and Cote d’Ivoire. Prior to joining the foreign service, Walter worked as an advertising executive in New York – first for Kenyon & Eckhardt and then for Grey Advertising. Before that, he was a legislative assistant to Congressman John Rhodes, the former Minority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. Walter was born and raised in San Francisco. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in history in 1977.
