Prior to the concert Joaquin Roces was able to address the packed venue and spoke about the NNIC and its wide range of programs from cultural and educational exchanges to language programs. Mike Graff from IIE in Washington DC was also able to address the crowd prior to Whitney taking the stage. According to Knitting Factory staff, the venue was sold out with 1260 people in attendance. Half of the proceeds for all the merchandising for Whitney Myer were donated to the NNIC.

At the 11th Annual Global Gala, Dr. Carina Black unvieled the Rhoda’Bobby’ Talso Educational Outreach Scholarship. Ms. Talso dedicated herlife to educaional outreach, community connections and service, as well as broadening her knowledge through international travel. Picture with her daughters, Maija and Liisa, is Mr.Wayne Howle, NNIC Board President, and Jill Derby, Honorary Chair ofthe Global Gala. Mr. Howle and Ms. Derby presented several certificates and awards honoring ‘Bobby’ Talso’s work in our community. Maija and Liisa recieved them on behalf of their mother.

This was the first year international visitors on the International Visitors Leadership Program participated at this event. Two women’s IVLP delegations—“Women and Justice” and “Women as Political Leaders”— joined us as the special guests. The international women were seated with members of the community during the event, allowing intriguing, educational and meaningful conversations and cultural exchange. The guests left inspired by the international visitors with a greater knowledge of the type of work the international visitors are doing in their communities and the global effects they have. With over 220 attendees, the luncheon was a huge success. Through the profits from the luncheon and the fine raffle, over $6000 was raised for women’s scholarships in the Northern Nevada area!

We thank everyone who participated and supported this cause and look forward to next year’s International Women’s Day.

The Northern Nevada International Center (NNIC) was awarded a grant in the amount of $352,000 by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to host 25 South African entrepreneurs over a two-year period. NNIC, which is a sponsored project of the University of Nevada, Reno, will collaborate with Sierra Nevada College (SNC) to provide internships for two sets of 12 to 13 young entrepreneurs.

The first set of entrepreneurs is scheduled to arrive in Reno mid-February and we are looking for both internship providers and home hosts for the 12 visitors. The types of businesses we seek are in the following areas: IT and communication, land surveying/GIS, tourism and hospitality, film production, fashion/clothes designing, carpentry and environmental conservation. Internships will last about five weeks and visitors will intern Mondays through Wednesdays each week from February 22-March 26. The remaining two days, the interns are studying to receive an entrepreneurship certificate through Sierra Nevada College.

The benefits for hosting a South African in a company are manifold; the young entrepreneurs will bring fresh ideas and creative energy to learn about American entrepreneurship to the workplace. Additionally, a select number of American internship mentors will be eligible for travel to South Africa in September of this year, for a 10-day all-expense paid trip to meet up again with their interns and learn about the South African business climate.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), South Africa has the lowest entrepreneurial activity rate of all developing countries. It also has the lowest start-up of new companies. The Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) hopes to increase the understanding of the links between entrepreneurial activity and free markets and the importance of transparency and accountability of business and government.

This part-time accounting support position is located at the Northern Nevada International Center (NNIC) at the University of Nevada, Reno. Duties include external and internal accounts payable/receivable; bank reconciliation; managing multiple grants; adhering to sub-grant requirements; processing payments and invoices, issuing checks; compiling and maintaining financial and statistical data; database management; Quickbooks; internal training; HR related document processing; and other duties as assigned. This position adheres to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and works independently under general supervision.

Washoe County students competed in the annual essay contest sponsored in part by the Reno Sunrise Rotary Club. The topic for the essays was “Renewing American Friendships with the World” and the categories were divided into Elementary, Middle School and High School. The winner in each of the three categories were Bailey Ivory from Van Gorder Elementary; Mikaela Caudell from Dilworth Middle School and finally Ben Calingaert from Damonte Ranch High School. In addition, the NNIC presented awards to Carmelo Urza, Director of the University Studies Abroad Consortium; Dr. Susan Bender, Director of UNR’s Office of International Students and Scholars; and Mary Lewellen, an international development expert.
